The UAE was abuzz this month with actor-director Robert de Niro advocating his commercial activities in Antigua and Barbuda. That is an altogether different agenda than a celebrity walking the red carpet to promote a movie. But does this sort of marquee-level investment campaign actually work? Marketers claim that it raises awareness; trade authorities cringe at an over-the-top budget. In this case, we suspect the government in St. John’s will realize a handsome return for the twin-island nation of near 100,000 people. Arab investors see a lot of deal flow from all other the world; it may take an outsized spotlight to draw attention to prime opportunities. Antigua has often sat on the sideline, while other well-heeled destinations like Saint Kitts and Nevis have drawn the lion’s share of attention from international glitterati. ■
